Africa GreenCo Group showcased its pioneering regional energy trading platform at the Africa Infrastructure & Energy Conference (AIEC), hosted by Financial Markets Indaba in partnership with Latham & Watkins LLP. The presentation demonstrated how innovative commercial models, regional electricity markets and private sector investment can accelerate Africa’s clean energy transition while improving the bankability of renewable energy projects across the continent.
As Southern Africa’s first operational renewable energy trader and the first independent market participant on the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), GreenCo has established a unique platform that purchases electricity from Independent Power Producers (IPPs) through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and supplies reliable, flexible power solutions to utilities, municipalities, mining companies and large industrial customers.
The company highlighted significant milestones, including more than US$70 million in liquidity support, over 180MW of signed PPAs, more than 3TWh of electricity traded and operations spanning Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa, with expansion underway into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A key focus of GreenCo’s presentation was its innovative approach to reducing investment risk for renewable energy projects. By combining long-term bankable PPAs of up to 25 years, regional electricity trading through SAPP, diversified customer portfolios and a GuarantCo-backed liquidity facility, GreenCo provides developers and lenders with greater revenue certainty while strengthening investor confidence. The model also enables cross-border electricity trading, energy banking, wheeling, balancing services and asset optimisation, creating greater flexibility for both renewable energy producers and commercial electricity consumers.
GreenCo further demonstrated how its commercial model is supporting the financing and delivery of transformational energy infrastructure across Southern Africa. The company highlighted its role in facilitating the financing of the 100MW Chisamba Solar PV Project by committing to purchase the project’s entire electricity output for the first 13 years, before optimising supply through regional trading and complementary power sources to provide reliable baseload electricity to customers.
The presentation also showcased GreenCo’s successful 125MW emergency power import programme for Zambia, illustrating how innovative financing and regional electricity markets can strengthen energy security during periods of supply disruption.
The company also outlined its strong commercial growth, with traded electricity volumes increasing from 8.5GWh in 2022 to more than 1.1TWh traded during 2026 to date, while building a diversified customer portfolio that includes utilities, mining companies, manufacturers and commercial enterprises. Supported by a sophisticated energy trading platform, experienced trading team and robust risk management systems, GreenCo continues to position itself as a catalyst for private investment into Africa’s renewable energy sector.
The Africa Infrastructure & Energy Conference brought together governments, institutional investors, development finance institutions, commercial banks, infrastructure developers and global capital providers to explore practical solutions for mobilising long-term private capital into Africa’s infrastructure and energy sectors.

GreenCo’s participation highlighted the growing importance of innovative market-based solutions in unlocking investment, strengthening regional power integration and accelerating the continent’s transition to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy.
