Fitch Ratings, one of the world’s leading credit rating agencies, participated in the Africa Infrastructure & Energy Conference (AIEC) hosted by Financial Markets Indaba, with Christiane Kuti, Senior Director and Head of EMEA Energy Infrastructure Analysis, providing investors, governments and project sponsors with valuable insights into the role of independent credit analysis in mobilising long-term capital for infrastructure and energy projects across Africa.
During the conference, Christiane Kuti outlined Fitch Ratings’ analytical approach to assessing infrastructure and project finance transactions, demonstrating how robust credit analysis enhances transparency, supports investor confidence and strengthens the bankability of projects seeking access to international debt and capital markets.

Drawing on Fitch’s globally recognised rating methodologies, the presentation explored the principal credit considerations applied throughout the lifecycle of infrastructure projects, from construction and operational performance to revenue stability, debt structure, financial resilience, legal protections and broader macroeconomic risks.
The presentation also highlighted Fitch’s sector-specific analytical frameworks covering infrastructure and project finance, including transportation infrastructure, thermal power generation and renewable energy projects. These specialised methodologies provide investors and project sponsors with a structured approach for evaluating the unique risks and credit characteristics associated with different infrastructure sectors, helping improve consistency, comparability and confidence in project assessments across international markets.
Emphasising the importance of independent credit opinions in attracting institutional capital, Fitch Ratings demonstrated how transparent and internationally recognised rating criteria can support the development of bankable infrastructure transactions capable of attracting pension funds, insurance companies, commercial lenders, development finance institutions and other long-term investors. The agency’s analytical framework provides market participants with a common benchmark for assessing project risk while supporting efficient capital allocation across infrastructure sectors.
Following the conference, Fitch Ratings made available its comprehensive Infrastructure & Project Finance Rating Criteria together with sector-specific criteria covering transportation infrastructure, thermal power and renewable energy projects.
The reports, which are freely accessible through the Fitch Ratings website, provide detailed guidance on the agency’s analytical methodology and are intended to support project sponsors, governments, lenders and investors seeking a deeper understanding of the credit assessment process.

The Africa Infrastructure & Energy Conference brought together senior government officials, institutional investors, development finance institutions, commercial banks, project developers and infrastructure sponsors from across Africa and international markets to explore practical solutions for mobilising private capital into the continent’s infrastructure and energy sectors.
Fitch Ratings’ participation reinforced the critical role that independent credit analysis and transparent rating methodologies play in strengthening investor confidence, improving project bankability and facilitating greater access to international infrastructure finance.
